Diagnostic evaluations for autism spectrum disorders
Diagnostic testing for an autism spectrum disorder is completed over several appointments, so that you or your child can be as fresh and focused for each part of testing as possible.
To begin to referral process for an evaluation, please contact us directly by phone or email. You do not need a formal referral from your pediatrician. Once we receive your request, we will send you some preliminary forms to complete. When these are completed and returned, we can place you on our waitlist (please contact us directly for the specific length of our wait for an evaluation.) Once we are ready to schedule your evaluation, we will then contact you directly.
In the first appointment, we will meet with you to complete a developmental and behavioral history. Providing any paperwork or records you have from testing your child may have completed previously (either from other providers or through school) is very helpful to bring with you. This first part can take about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
During your additional appointments, we will complete autism-specific testing with your son or daughter that looks at specifics regarding their communication, social skills, and perspective taking, along with other specific skills. We would also provide a variety of testing that looks at cognitive skills, adaptive skills and any other behavioral concerns that may be relevant.
Once testing is completed, we will set up a follow up appointment with you where we would go through all the testing scores and discuss any additional diagnoses and recommendations for what to do next.
